Dark Blues win 2007 Boat Race

Oxford wins the 2007 Lightweight Women's Boat Race, on 1 April, with an official margin of 1 length and time 4:11. Because of high gusty headwinds it was decided on the morning of the race to shorten the course to approximately 1150m, with stakeboats just outside Upper Thames Rowing Club. In spite of high waves and a strong headwind, Oxford on the Berkshire station made a beeline for the Temple right over and through the roughest water, with gutsy attack every stroke. A steady gain over the early part of the course moved Oxford up to just over a length ahead, demonstrating a brave and determined row in true Oxford style.

President Alice Millest summarises the race:
The weather conditions on the Henley stretch for the 2007 Henley Boat Races were arguably choppy and dangerous, leading the HBR Committee to shorten the course
to around 1500m. However, OUWLRC had confidence on such a windy course as they had been training in conditions worse than those seen on April 1st to ensure
they had ‘turned over every stone’ for their Boat Race. We were on the stake boat before Cambridge and so had the luxury of taking our time de-kitting and
our cox was able to place us where she wanted to. The stream was not as strong as the 2006 race had seen and so we sat with our blades covered at front stops
while we waited to be called to attention. A gust of wind did shift our hull towards the Bucks back in between the ‘attention’ and the ‘go’ but the crew was
not flustered. Victoria, our cox, managed to bring us back onto course without disrupting our rhythm and we sat up into the white horses that the Berks station
had the worst of and started to take seats off Cambridge. Victoria called for ‘power and passion’ as she made her beeline for the Temple and we had pulled out
to a length with 500m to go. In the centre of the river the rocky water created by stream against wind was at its worst and it felt as though each time we
pushed to extend our lead a wave or gust would strike us and I feared Cambridge might push back. We held our own and composed ourselves in the last 200m gaining
us a foot or so clear water coming into Temple Island. The victory was sweet and somewhat overwhelming, in particular for those of us who lost so narrowly in
2006 and had dreamt of revenge since last May. Those who know Sarah Cornick and her Boat Races can only try to understand what Sunday will have been like for
her, big congrats Cornick!
