OUWLRC brought a silver medal home from Gent International Regatta in Belgium last weekend.
Three members of OUWLRC along with two members of OUWBC travelled to Gent International Regatta with the aim of gaining some valuable racing experience against some of the top crews of both the UK and the Europe, but returned home with more than just experience!
A late arrival in Belgium on Friday night and very early start to racing on Saturday morning was not going to stop Oxford taking full advantage of the regatta. Three members of OUWLRC, Sarah Cornick, Linda Reynard and Katie Taylor, along with Alex Cairns of OUWBC faced a tough heat in the openweight coxless fours event, but raced well to reach the final. As only the fourth fastest crew coming in to the final, the four knew they had some work to do, but attacked the final with true Oxford racing spirit! The four finished in second place gaining the crew a silver medal.
The four raced again on Sunday with a slightly different crew and different rig. A successful heat saw the four reach the final where they faced tough competition from Thames, Oxford Brookes and Nereus to finish in fourth ahead of City of Oxford – a great improvement on the results of the first heat.
A lightweight pair of Linda Reynard and Sarah Cornick put in a great performance to reach in the final in the open weight pairs event.
Amelia Van Manen of OUWBC also had a fantastic row in the senior single scull, making the semi final in a field including an Olympic silver medallist and world champion, two Belgian national team rowers, and GB team rowers who had recently returned from final trials.
